What is “Page Strength”?
The Page Strength of a website is a value that you will get as output by using the Page Strength Tool. Page Strength is based on a large number of factors:
- Links pointing to full URL (Yahoo)
- Links pointing to domain (Yahoo)
- Position for first four words of title tag on target URL (Google)
- Age of Domain
- Links from domains with .edu TLDs (Yahoo)
- Links from domains with .gov TLDs (Yahoo)
- Alexa Rank
- Domain name visibility (Google)
- Internal Link Percent
- Number of search results for URL search at del.icio.us
- Listings in DMOZ (ODP)
- Links found in Wikipedia
- Google Pagerank of full URL and Domain
What is it good for?
Nobody could answer this question better than the 2 creators of the Page Strength tool, Matthew Inman and Rand Fishkin:
The Page Strength Tool is designed to replace the often inaccurate and infrequently updated Google PageRank score in the toolbar. Sure, we don’t have access to nearly the amount of data they do and we’re not purporting this to be 100% accurate or even a perfect metric for relative importance (though, in our testing, it was very good at that).
Why do I need to know the Page Strength of my website?
There are 2 major reasons why you should calculate the Page Strength of your website:
- by using the Page Strength tool you will not only get the Page Strength of your website but also a lot of other good information (how many .EDU domains link to my website? How many .GOV domains? How many links do I have in Wikipedia?)
- If you are selling links on your website and you are a member of the most famous webmaster related forums like Digitalpoint, you will have seen that more and more people every day that try to sell links on their website, are using not only PageRank anymore but also Page Strength as one of the major factors to decide how much to charge for a link.
Will Page Strength be more important than PageRank in the future?
I don’t think that this will ever happen. The tool is awesome because of the great variety of information you can get thanks to it; also the idea to create a new “value” instead of PageRank to compare the importance of two or more websites is very original. Anyway PageRank has become something that cannot be replaced (or maybe “cannot be replaced in the near future), because of it’s popularity and importance.

We really rate this tool, although our page strength is ostensibly less than our Google PR, we think it probably offers a more ‘balanced’ assessment of the sites worth and of course it keeps us on our toes.
