Often I am reading in the forums that having a back link from a website with an .EDU domain will increase your rankings in the search engines and that these kind of links are better than .com, .net .org … back links. An .EDU back link will increase your popularity but NOT because of it’s nature.

Google is not making any difference between a back link coming from an .EDU site, .COM site or whatever, this would make years of research useless and it would be to easy to make your site being considered important using some “tricks”. EDU domain names are usually used by universities and research institutes, that’s why they usually are considered “trusted link” by search engines and especially by Google.  The point is that TLD is not making the difference, a university.EDU site would be exactly important like a university.COM site, it’s not the domain but the content that is makes the difference.

Why should give Google more credit to sites with an .edu domain? Only because usuall edu domains are used by universities? As many webmasters I am sure that an .EDU link is not worth more (in terms of PageRank) than a normal link.

That would be “Myth”, not “Mith”. Get it right and folks are more likely to listen.

Only because they are trusted, webmasters think that a link from an .EDU page with PageRank is more valuable than a link from another page with the same PageRank. I recently wrote an article about the Myth of .EDU domains. […]

You are very right. I’ve also written a longer write-up of why .edu domains do not offer any special value. I think it pretty much backs your claims.
