Getting your pages out of Google’s Supplemental Result Index is a great way to increase search engine traffic coming from Google . The first article I’ve read about this topic was written by Chris Garret managed to increase it’s search engine traffic by 20%. Recently Shoemoney.com was able to increase his search engine traffic by 1400% by getting most of it’s pages out of the supplemental result index.
Why are pages placed in the supplemental index?
Pages that are in the supplemental index are placed there because they are trusted less. Since they are crawled less frequently and have less resources diverted toward them, it makes sense that Google does not typically rank these pages as high as pages in the regular search index.
How can I find out if my pages are in the supplemental index?
The easiest way to do this is to make a search like this “site:www.yoursite.com *** -dagdhadsa” (without quotes) in Google. If you are using Firefox there is also a great extension offered by Seobook.com that calculates the supplemental result for every website with a simple click.
How can I get out of the supplemental index?
This can be done by working around your robot.txt. I tried the technique suggested by notsoboringlife.com and I had really bad results. My supplemental results increased from 925 to 1200 within one week. Also JhonChow.com tried this technique and his results were even worse than mine. His supplemental pages increased from 1780 to 2100 and he also lost a lot of positions in Google search results for some of his major keywords.
Finally I decided to dedicate some time to my robot.txt and I think that this robot.txt will get a lot of my pages out of the supplemental index within a month. It is written especially for Wordpress blogs and you are free to download it and to modifiy it for your website : http://www.linkrain.com/robots.txt.
I will update this post in a few weeks to let you know if my robots.txt worked and if my search engine traffic increased. Please also consider that this robot.txt is optimized for Wordpress blogs.

I think Matt Cutts has just recently published an explanation on the SI. If I read it correct - pages in SI don’t affect your ranking. I have examined mine and decided to simply let them be. I don’t think there was any effective study done to this point that proves that it will actually hurt your rankings. I did learn that my robots.txt needs a bit of optimization for Google to avoid caching */feed and */trackbak pages
Maybe they don’t affect your ranking but many websites have seen a search engine traffic increment once they removed some pages from Google’s supplemental index. I’m still stuck at 900 supplemental results, I hope they go down soon so that I can see if it is really useful to get out of the supplemental index.
Great post, helped me iron out some of the queries I had about the robots.txt file. I haven’t put your robots.txt on my blog yet. First I had one more query. Currently, my robots file included:
*******START******
Sitemap: http://manukhanna.com/sitemap.xml
User-agent: *
User-agent: *
Disallow: /wp-
Disallow: /feed/
Disallow: /trackback/
*******END******
I am also using the Wordpress Duplicate Content Cure plugin.
Will Using both the robots.txt file and this plugin cause any problems?
I would suggest to use only the robots.txt, these “duplicate content” plugins don’t seem to give good results.

I honestly don’t understand why you would want to remove pages from index. To me the more indexed pages, the greater the exposure and traffic.
Please help.
I think the google have done away with the supplemental index (i think!).
