For a new website it is hard to become popular. Once your site is ready you will have no back links and it is difficult to find someone who will exchange links with you, because you page has a Google Page Rank of 0. If you don’t want to spend money in advertising to drive visitors to your pages and to get better search engine rankings, there are still some things you can do:

  • Submit your website to free reciprocal and non-reciprocal directories
  • Search for link partners that don’t care about Page rank (very difficult to find)
  • Participate in some forums and leave a signature with anchor text and your URL to your website

Once you will have some back links, you will get a Page rank with the next Google update and even with Page rank 3-4 you will be able to find a lot of other webmasters willing to exchange links with you.

There is one thing you should NEVER do to get back links: submit to FFA sites!

An FFA site is a “Free For All” links page that allows you to leave a link to your website without giving them a backlink. There are still people that believe that you will benefit of those links:

Is there no benefit to FFA links? Well, I did stumble across one possible benefit to ffa links. If your page stays on a ffa link for a bit, then when you submit to search engines you page looks a little more popular. Ranking on search engines are determined by a great many things, one of which is how many pages you have linked to your page. So you might get some small benefit from ffa links.

Don’t listen to them. FFA sites are considered SPAM by search engines like Google. Even if the search engines would consider them as a normal website, they are so full of links that you would not benefit of the part of Page rank you should receive from that back link. Have a look at this site , it’s a small FFA site because they usually have more than 100 links on every page. This one has “only” 61 links on it. You won’t benefit from placing a link on that site because:

  • FFA sites are considered SPAM sites by search engines
  • They don’t attract visitors because they don’t have interesting content
  • They don’t have a high Page rank and you have to divide it with hundreds of other websites

There is still some software like FFA blaster (software that pubblishs your link on thousands of FFA sites) and there are still people buying this and spamming the Web with useless links. Don’t make the same mistake and keep your site a Quality Website.

AFAIK you cannot be harmed by any incoming link (otherwise it would become a weapon against competitors) - however, you can be harmed by reciprocating a link to these sites.

Yes Seth, you are right. Submitting to FFA sites won’t hurt your website…and it won’t help your website either. That’s something new i’ve learned within the last months.

I haven’t seen anything negative or postive in respect to this in looking at the many web sites we host. I see the incoming links from these search engines on occasion. Dogpile started off this way and now they are looking like they have grown from a little ffa.

I beleive it’s a positive if for no other reason than the occasional click coming from them.
