For all those that think that links in a web directory are not valuable anymore: Google does put weight on links from Directories! There are many discussions on all webmaster related forums about the value of paid links in Web Directories, and finally it’s proved that getting links in quality directories will help websites to improve their search engine ranking and PageRank.
This is what he recently commented in his famous blog post on how to report paid links:
I’ll try to give a few rules of thumb to think about when looking at a directory. When considering submitting to a directory, I’d ask questions like:
- Does the directory reject urls? If every url passes a review, the directory gets closer to just a list of links or a free-for-all link site.
- What is the quality of urls in the directory? Suppose a site rejects 25% of submissions, but the urls that are accepted/listed are still quite low-quality or spammy. That doesn’t speak well to the quality of the directory.
- If there is a fee, what’s the purpose of the fee? For a high-quality directory, the fee is primarily for the time/effort for someone to do a genuine evaluation of a url or site.
On the other hand these are bad news for all the free directories full of advertisements that accept every kind of website just to get content and visitors that will click on the ads. Of course there are also free quality directories but those directories that recieve 1000 free submissions a day and approve most of these links, prove to include also low quality websites.
Riassuming what Matt Cutts said: Paid directories are good if they don’t include low quality websites and if the fee is taken to guarantee a good service. Actually that is the same thing I thought when creating www.linkrain.com as a paid directory. By accepting only paid inclusions, it is possible to filter many low quality sites that won’t pay to get a quality backlink.
