I’m optimizing websites for search engines since many years now and I’ve learned a lot of things on how to optimize a website to rank high for certain keywords. Two months ago I wrote an article about how to get on the first page of Google search result pages that remained on the first page of Digitalpoint’s keyword forum since I have published it, and it’s still there. More than 2.200 webmasters have read it and it is still giving a lot of good information to the forum members.

When I wrote that article I used the technique I described, to rank high for “Seo Friendly Web Directory”, which I’m ranking second now if you make a search for it in Google (Google.com, in all other countries I’m ranking between the 1st position and the 8th). After this article I wrote down another guide to rank high in search engines with 8 very unique tips to optimize a website.

I used the techniques I’ve described in those two articles for many different keyword phrases which I’m now ranking on the first page of Google SERPS and that bring me some really good traffic (as you can see by the great Alexa Rank I achieved only 6 months after starting this website). If you make a search in Google for “Seo friendly web directory”, the output will be 1.680.000 results. I’m also ranking on the first page for “seo friendly directory” which gives you 2.270.000 results if you search for it in Google. To rank on the first page for those keywords isn’t really easy but also not too hard. That’s why I’ve decided, three weeks ago, to target THE keyword that every Web Directory would love to rank on the first page: “Web Directory”.

If you search for “Web Directory” in Google, it will find 759.000.000 results! So it should me much harder to get on the first page for this particular keyword combination. I started to work on it 3 weeks ago and here are my results:

3 weeks ago: not listed in top 1.000 results for “Web Directory”

2 weeks ago: listed in position 679 (on the 68th results page…)

1 week ago: listed on position 56

Today: Position 17!

Keyword Optimization

If you think that it’s not hard to get on the first page for this keyword, just make some research on Digitalpoint (to find some information about how many webmasters try to rank on the first page for it) or check who is ranking 1st for this keyword ( directory.google.com :D ).

I don’t konw since how long you are practicing search engine optimization. If you are doing it only since some months, try to optimize your website for an easy keyword first (one that gives a few results if you search for it in Google). If you get some good results, try with a harder one as next, and so on.
    Another quick tip ;)

Congrats on your success story, ranking high on that sort of keywords is very impressive. I’m also doing a little SEO myself which i’ve learned a lot from reading your posts.
I have this one week site which i’ve been optimized well, just after only 2 days i’ve managed to rank #1 in G for my keyphrase and mostly on the first page on random related keywords :) but just yesterday little that i know that i’ve been losing traffic (mostly from Google SE) and i found out that i’m no where to be found on google for my keywords… :(
I’ve read about “Google Sandbox” which i think is the case for my new site. I’ve read that it can take almost 9 whole month to be excluded from sandbox. Have you really been “Sandboxed” will you share any experience on this matter?
    Thanks again Linkrain.

Ranking first in Google for a keyphrase after only 2 days is amazing. Maybe you got too many backlinks in a too short time span so that Google decided to penalize your site.

I will search for some info about Google Sandbox and post it as soon as possible.

    Hi Linkrain,
strange though, now my site is back on track… as for today i’m getting SE visitors back to normal and increasing, i can’t explain how but i’m glad i’m back on the ranking.
I think it’s a good idea if you can write a post about “google sandbox” cause not may webmaster knew about this term. I found a tread about it on DP Forum, it might be useful.
    Thanks again.
