I made a list of some factors you should consider before going to start a blog. You should check them if you don’t have a specific topic in mind to write about. It is quite possible that you have so many unique talents that no particular talent is singled out in your mind. So, how do you find the topic that is going to make you blog successful and that is going to bring the most profit to you? (Of course only if you are interested in making some profit…)

Well, the first thing you should do is to make a list of all the things you specialize in. Check if there is an audience looking for what you have to say. This can be done by using keyword selection tools such as Overture or Wordtracker to do some market research and search for popular keywords, or by using Technorati charts to target a high traffic niche.

If you still find a lot of topics you could write about by using this technique, choose the one with less competition. Basically you have to search for a niche where the demand for content is higher than the availability of such content. If you don’t succeed in finding a small niche you have a lot of information about, it will be much harder to make your blog successful.

In this case you must either be better than your competion. With better I mean that you will need a better writing style than your competion, you will have to post more often (if you competitors are posting an article a day, try to post at least two unique articles a day) and you content has to be more interesting ( in my opinion, one of the worst things to do is to write about the same things another blog has written about a few days before you).

Remember also to make your blog personal. If a visitor comes to a blog, he is interested in your point of view and not in a “general point of view”.

It is quite possible to jave a lousy blog and be very popular at the same time. If you are the only blogger that talks about a very small niche subject and for some reason this subject becomes a top story, your site can gain in popularity very quickly. Of course, it may not last long as others decide wheter or not they can better serve the audience that is seeking that kind of information. Being first always has it’s benefits though, so be creative and you can succeed, even if you are not the best writer.

Targeting a small niche can be also much more profitable than targeting a big one. Just have a look at my case. When I started this blog, I chose some topics I love to write about. I did not start it to make money but as you can see I’m running some advertisements on this blog. In fact I said to myself “why not make some money while I’m blogging and having fun”? Anyway, the topics I am writing about are all webmaster related and the advertisements I’m running on this site are served by Google (Google Adsense). Now, how many of my visitors do you think don’t know how an Adsense Block is made? Based on my Adsense statistics I would say less than 1% :D

If would have had some other interests, like fishing for example, I think that I would be making some serious money with the traffic I’m receiving since a few months. But who cares! Did I start this blog to make money or to have fun helping some other bloggers? Am I one of those crappy make money online bloggers( not all “make money online blogs” are crap, just the biggest part of them :) )? Definetly not!

Be unique and have fun, these are the best blogging tips ever ;)

2 comments to expand on what you’ve said:

    1. If you start out in a small niche, you can establish yourself in that small niche, then expand into a larger niche or additional smaller niches and appeal to a larger audience. Ex: fly fishing -> deep sea fishing -> fishing in general.

    2. If you’re looking to make money, it may be better off to be mediocre in a high-paying niche, than excellent in a poor-paying niche. Do your research, and know what your goals are.

    Another good post, thanks.

Great informational article - there is one problem that many people don’t realize - Overture is dead!!!

While they still have the tool online it hasn’t been updated since January of this year. Just do a search on any keyword and what you will get is a reply that will always start like this:
    “Searches done in January 2007:”

So anyone serious about their research should look into your second tool suggested - Wordtracker, in my opinion it surpasses anything else available anyway.
