I’ve seen these small buttons on a lot of different blogs
and finally I decided to try them also on my blog (for 2 days only). Blogtoplist is a sort of “Directory” for blogs with a lot of different categories. All you have to do to get included in this directory is to register an account, add your blog and place one of the small buttons shown in the image on your website to start tracking statistics and climb the blog list to the top. Your visitors can vote through these buttons for your blog, each vote counts as 100 unique visitors. However the buttons will also track the normal traffic you recieve (even if your visitors don’t vote for you) and the more you get, the higher you will be ranked on Blogtoplist.
I added the button on my blog and started to recieve some clicks but it was actually impossible to compete with the top sites (and if you don’t get on the main page of Blogtoplist.com, you won’t recieve much traffic). The blog ranking first on the main page of Blogtoplist recieves nearly 200.000 unique visitors every day and has an Alexa ranking of 571!
What?
There is a blog with such traffic and I never heared anything about it? Something strange is going on here…
This is the url of the blog that occupies position #1: http://gigistudio.over-blog.com/. A blog with such traffic should recieve lots of comments and trackbacks every day but after a closer look on the posts I realized that:
- the content is poor (mostly videos and images)
- most of the posts have no comments or trackbacks
- the blog is spammed with advertisements
And what about the domain? It is only a subdomain!
In fact, Over-blog is a French blog service very similar to ”Blogspot” or “Wordpress” that is giving you the possibility to register free blogs and recieve a subdomain of your choice. There are actually more than 500.000 registered blogs.
The problem (or maybe the good thing) is that every subdomain has the Alexa ranking of www.over-blog.com ! Every blog registered there will have an Alexa Ranking of 571! That’s why the blog is ranking first on Blogtoplist.com.
Another very interesting point are the clicks that the TOP 10 blogs are recieving from Blogtoplist. They get between 100 and 800 unique visitors from Blogtoplist every single day!
Now, how can I give my blog a big traffic boost?
Nothing easier than this…
- Register at Over-Blog.com and create a new blog (if you don’t know french language you can use Google’s language tools to traduce the website)
- Register your blog at Blogtoplist.com
- Place a tracker button on the new blog
Now sit back and watch your new blog climbing the TOP 10 of Blogtoplist.com.
And finally here is the evil plan to drive the traffic directly to your blog
:
Make a redirect so that all visitors coming from blogtoplist.com are redirected to your REAL blog!
And this is the evil plan to make money out of it
:
What if you build up a blog for one month with 30-40 unique articles and get it approved on websites like Reviewme?
The review me price would be incredibly high because it is based on Alexa ranking and Technorati ranking (even if you have a low Technorati ranking, the Alexa ranking alone will boost the price) and if you find someone that really believes that the shown Alexa ranking is yours, than you are going to make a lot of money.
I don’t think I’m going to try this technique because I’m a serious blogger, (or maybe I give it a try) but if someone is going to use this technique after reading this article, please let me know how it works.
If you get hundreds of uniques each day remeber who gave you the tip and buy me a coffee by clicking the link at the end of this post ![]()

not a bad idea… not a bad idea… i wondered why my blogcatalog rankings always were so low….
I think you meant “Blogtoplist” rankings
Anyway it’s to easy to cheat on this site, that’s why I removed the button from my blog. That is not a list of quality blogs.
great article..i’m 50/50 about trying it out. Its a kinda sneaky way to increase traffic and i dont know if i should do it…maybe if some other notable blogger attempts it …i’ll try it too !!
Hey Wolf Stone, why wait until some of the big bloggers tries it out? I would try it but actually I don’t have much time until the end of july because of my work…

Hey I’m taking you up on your idea, you can check out my progress to see how well it works @ my overblog site: http://patrickcurl.overblog.com
Thanks,

Hi Patrick,
Nice idea! So we can test if this trick is really working and if it is, you will be the first to benefit from it. Please let me know how it goes
Nice articles, you mention on your post about redirecting blogtoplist visitors to your REAL blog… can you explain how to do this, i might do some test project on this method. Good luck to Patrick and looking forward to hear positive feedback from your progress.
I have not thought about it yet. But you will have to display the over-blog site for some seconds and then redirect the visitor your real blog. I thing every programmer could do this in a bunch of minutes
Hi Linkrain , its once again me. Nice to get an article like this one . I am going to be a serious blogger now before this month i was one the kind who wanted to get quick traffic and quickly earn money on blog but now i know that quickly earning does you good for a limited period of time and then it harms you.
Well I am not going to do this kind of activity . As far as Rank is considered my Blog was Ranked 15 or 9 in Alexa because i used Blogspot.com. Ranking does not matter .What matters is the Quality of content and uniqueness in the Blog.
Wise words Ravi.
Patrick was going to try to cheat on blogtoplist.com but he did not get back yet to let us know if it really works.
Hi Patrick,
Nice idea! if it really works.(
What In The World Is A Blog Toplist…
Well… from my understanding it is a blog directory that is sorted by the score a blog gets each week… and this can be achieved either through unique visitors… or unique votes… with a ratio of 100:1 respectively. When a blog join…
Well I’m not planning on doing it myself as I just started and am learning the ropes of how to even blog… Over and out!
Trying It, hope it can be usefull now
I am going to try it for fun, hehehe.
