Two days ago there was an update of Google’s Adsense Policy as stated on the uffcial Adsense Blog:
The other noteworthy update: now you can place up to three link units on a page. As we’ve noted in the past, link units are a great way to provide relevant, user-friendly ads in hard-to-fit locations on your site. With the new opportunity to place three link units — and the plethora of link unit formats — we hope you’ll find great ways of incorporating this unique ad format on your site.
It is now possible to place 3 Adsense units and 3 link units on each page. Before this Policy update you were only allowed to place 3 Adsense Blocks and 1 Adsense Link Unit on a single page.
This can be an advantage for all those website with a complex template where it is hard to insert and blend the big Adsense Blocks. Link Units are smaller, easier to blend and will fit anywhere on a website.
From what I’ve read at Digitalpoint Forums, many webmasters think that this update won’t change anything in publishers earnings. Actually there is a big difference between the Google Adsense Block and the Adsense Link Unit:
- Everytime someone clicks on an advertisement in an Adsense Block, you earn money (except their CPM Ads)
- When a visitor clicks on a link from the Adsense Link Unit, he has to make a second click on any of the websites listed after he clicked the link. If the visitor makes only 1 click to reach the website where the “sponsored” pages are listed, without clicking on one of them, you want get any money.
This could be the reason why so many webmasters say that the Link Units are not working for them. I think this new update is worth a try.
In my experience, Adsense Link Units are performing worse than Adsense Blocks but they are still bringing a lot of clicks if placed in good position and blended correctly.

Hmm…I did not know about your site visitors having to click twice in order for you to actually earn money from link units! In my opinion, having the maximum of six ads on a single page is overkill and you might be actually earning less because of the ad competition.
